Resourcing information for private schools

This page provides funding information for private (independent) schools. You can now access our resourcing system Pourato to see the latest funding information for your school or kura.

Private school subsidy funding

We provide grants to independent schools from the private school subsidy funding pool. This funding is distributed between schools at a set rate per student.

Distribution of the fund is based on the estimated total private school rolls across New Zealand for the year. If the total private school roll increases, the set rate per student will decrease.

Private school subsidy funding is paid in quarterly instalments as your operational funding. You can view the details in Pourato.

Provisional roll

The provisional roll is an estimate of student numbers calculated using the last 3 years of roll information. Funding is initially calculated using your provisional roll and is adjusted throughout the year once your actual rolls are received.

2024 provisional rolls will be calculated and published in mid-September 2023.

You will receive an email notification once your 2024 provisional roll has been published in Pourato.

Ongoing resourcing scheme (ORS)

Under the ongoing resourcing scheme, ākonga with high learning needs receive a targeted mix of resources. We:

  • contribute to the cost of teacher aides for ORS-funded ākonga. The funding is paid termly around the third week of the term
  • pay a small consumables grant around the third week of each term
  • provide specialist support
  • fund specialist teacher time (additional teacher) for each verified 'very high' and 'high' ākonga.

Specialist teacher time is paid to the school as a lump sum payment around the fifth Wednesday of each term.

You can view invoices for these payments in the Secure Data Portal:
