School designs are reviewed as part of our wider design assurance processes, to ensure that projects will meet our design standards. All project team consultants must be aware of and comply with our assurance processes.
Design review
The School Design team undertake independent, high-level reviews of major school projects at various design stages. The team is supported by a panel of independent Architects, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers and other subject matter experts where necessary. Panel members are independent, professional consultants with extensive school design experience.
Reviews are undertaken for all new schools and school projects doing significant redevelopments. Design reviews:
- ensure that design teams are basing their work on our design principles, standards and guidelines for school property.
- promote fit-for purpose outcomes for schools and the Ministry as a large portfolio asset owner.
- allow design teams and reviewers to collaborate and share lessons and experiences for the benefit of school projects.

These checklists provide design teams with the documentation requirements for formal design reviews. Please submit a completed deliverables checklist with every review submission, confirming what is and is not included.
