Te Mahere Taiao – The Environmental Action Plan for School Property

Te Mahere Taiao – The Environmental Action Plan for School Property sets out our vision to create an environmentally sustainable school property portfolio that benefits school communities and the environment.

Te Mahere Taiao sets out a series of actions the Ministry will take to reduce the environmental impacts of our school property portfolio. These actions are an important part of the Ministry’s response to the Government’s wider environmental objectives.

Te Mahere Taiao applies to the construction and management of the Ministry’s school buildings. Every stage of the school property lifecycle has an environmental impact, including how we design schools; the materials used to construct and maintain schools; and the energy used during a school’s everyday use.

The Action Plan focuses on reducing operational carbon and embodied carbon, which is produced when operating schools and when upgrading or building new schools.

Te Mahere Taiao plays a key role in helping to achieve the objectives of Te Rautaki Rawa Kura – the School Property Strategy, 2030.
