New version effective 20 April 2026

This is the new version of the licensing criterion and associated guidance.

Criterion PF218#

There is space available for the restful sleep of children who need it at any time they are attending.

Guidance #

How to show you are complying#

Each home must have a space available for restful sleep when a child needs to rest or sleep. The space will differ from home to home depending on the home layout, needs of the children and parent expectations.

Consider:

  • how to minimise noise to support restful and undisturbed sleep or rest
  • creating some kind of barrier between the sleep/rest space and the area used for other activities
  • how the educator can maintain effective supervision of other children while monitoring sleeping children.

It is preferable that a separate room is available so that, when a child chooses to sleep, there is a quiet area provided. However, you can create a quiet area within the activity space where children can rest or sleep as needed.

If the same space is used for both activities and rest, it is important to make sure the environment is large enough to be suitable for both purposes.
