Criterion HS225#

All practicable steps are taken to ensure that children do not come into contact with any person on the premises who is under the influence of alcohol or any other substance that has a detrimental effect on their functioning or behaviour.

Guidance#

How to show you are complying#

You must make sure that no one uses, or is under the influence of, alcohol or any other substance when children are attending.

Implementing a range of measures to make sure no-one uses, or is under the influence of, alcohol or any other substance can be helpful, including:

  • engagement agreement or contract for service – that outlines expectations for behaviour and substance-free engagement
  • policy – that establishes formal rules and consequences regarding alcohol and substance use
  • signage – displaying clear reminders in relevant areas to reinforce expectations.

It’s important to think ahead about situations that may arise in a home-based service and how to respond appropriately. These topics should be covered during induction and may include:

  • what the educator should do if a parent or caregiver arrives under the influence of alcohol or another substance
  • how to respond if an adult in the child’s home consumes alcohol in front of the educator and/or child.
