We’re inviting whānau to share their feedback on the Parent Portal to help us improve the information and support we provide. Take a few minutes to complete our short survey.
Example book to read together#
Kia Tere Kōrua is an example of books your mokopuna might use in their first 6 months at kura. It’s a wordless book designed to support mokopuna to create their own stories based on the pictures.
You can use the slides below to explore the book together. Let mokopuna decide how they want to tell the story. You may want to go through the pictures a couple of times first.
The slides are best viewed full screen. Select the 3 dots at the bottom of the slides and then select 'Enter full screen'.
The resources may not be in accessible formats.
- Set a regular time to read like before bedtime or before dinner.
- Let's make reading a positive experience. "Which book do you want to read?", “Looking forward to our story tonight.”
- Activate their thinking. "What do you think the story is about when you look at the front cover?" Or, "Why do you think they used these pictures."
- Find a fun way to start reading with mokopuna. "Me tīmata tāua. Do you want to read the first page for me or shall I?"
- Ask questions about the pictures – what, where, why, how, when.
- Acknowledge the progress of mokopuna. “Ka pai I could see you already know the word ‘ngāko’ now.” “I liked it how you took a pause when you saw an irakati | full stop.”
- Link the story to mokopuna experiences.
- Help mokopuna retell the story.
- Talk about the characters, the setting and the main idea of the story.
- Encourage mokopuna to reread the story with you to build their accuracy and fluency.
- Read to them.
- Take turns reading a page.
- Talk about the pictures.
- Keep it light and positive.
Supporting reading at home#
- Some mokopuna like to be read to, so keep reading to them.
- Visit the library, most libraries have a good te reo Māori section or go online together and help them find books in te reo Māori.
- Sing waiata together.
- Let mokopuna see you enjoying reading and talk about what you are reading.
- Point out words on signs, shops and labels.
- Play word games like, "What is a word that begins with the letter A".
