There is a huge range of valuable learning tools, resources and opportunities available in each home and in the communities around them, for example:

  • baking
  • cooking
  • gardening
  • local parks
  • playgroups
  • library story times.

Home-based service providers often have equipment educators can access to support what they already have at home.

Choosing your equipment#

Think about the equipment, resources and opportunities that will support and extend children’s learning in home-based settings.

  1. Consider what equipment and resources will meet the curriculum standards, and will:
    1. actively engage the children who are attending
    2. acknowledge and reflect the local community
    3. acknowledge and reflect the dual heritage of New Zealand.

  2. Have a variety of equipment and resources that support children’s development, abilities and current and emerging interests.

  3. Visit other home-based services to view the variety and choices of equipment they are providing and discuss their reasons for choosing that equipment.
  4. Make a list of equipment you think you may need in your service to help educators extend on the resources they have in their home. Suppliers have catalogues and price lists available.
  5. Make sure that all equipment complies with health and safety standards outlined in the Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations 2008 and the Licensing Criteria for Home-Based Education and Care Services 2008.

Ready for children#

Home-based services must be ready for children before we undertake a licensing visit. This means:

  • the home-based educators are ready to have children in their homes
  • the person responsible has checked that the home complies with the home-based licensing criteria and is ready for children.

If home-based educators will be accessing any facilities, equipment or materials provided by your service, these must also be ready.
