The Ngarimu Video Competition for ākonga in Year 7 to 13 is now open!

As a part of the Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board, the Ngarimu Video Competition for ākonga Māori in Year 7 through to 13 is now open for submissions.

Winners of the 2022 Ngarimu Video Competition at their award ceremony at Te Papaiouru Marae, Ōhinemutu in Rotorua.

The purpose of the competition is to honour the legacy of Victoria Cross winner Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and the 28th (Māori) Battalion through promoting study and encouraging the learning of te reo Māori and Māori history, tradition, and culture as it relates to the Māori Battalion.

We invite ākonga take up this opportunity to practise storytelling, research and to learn about the 28th (Māori) Battalion history.

Ākonga can submit a three-to-five-minute video in English or te reo Māori, and be in to win one of six prizes for themselves and their school or kura.

Videos must be submitted no later than Friday 8 September 2023.

Topic ideas for videos are below:

  • Choose a tupuna or member of the 28th (Māori) Battalion from your rohe and tell us what makes that person special to your community.
  • Choose a 28th (Māori) Battalion event. What made it special to your rohe?
  • Explore and analyse the contribution of Māori to the war effort in the First and/or Second World War from a contemporary view.
  • The important role of 28th Māori Battalion wahine | pouaru at home.

Soldiers in the 28th (Māori) Battalion and their whānau were as diverse as their stories. How will your school or kura share their story?
