As well as consulting on the draft NZC learning areas, we are seeking feedback on the draft resources.
A knowledge-rich curriculum requires a different approach to planning and teaching, and we recognise that many teachers would like examples and outlines to help get them started.
Which learning areas are prioritised#
We have prioritised resources for Year 9 draft learning areas. This is because students in this cohort will be the first to use the updated Years 11-13 content and proposed qualifications from 2028.
We have also published resources to support the updated English and Mathematics & Statistics learning areas.
We have already delivered:
- structured literacy professional development
- resources and staffing for Years 0-6 English
- resources and professional development for Years 0-10 Mathematics and Statistics.
The new resources#
This is the first time we’ve developed curriculum resources with this level of detail. They are closely aligned with the science of learning and allow teachers to use and adapt them while unpacking the knowledge-rich draft learning areas. This means you can pick them up and try them out or use as exemplars that help you plan and practise your own knowledge-rich units and lessons.
Annual plans#
Exemplar annual plans for draft Year 9 learning areas: Science, Social Sciences, Technology, The Arts, and Health and Physical Education.
Learning kits#
Learning kits made up of exemplar unit plans and lesson plans are for draft Year 9 learning areas:
English#
Years 7 and 8 annual plans and learning kits will be released in the coming weeks.
Mathematics and Statistics #

More resources coming in 2026#
The Arts learning kit and updated Learning Languages supports will also become available during Term 1.
Learning kits for all Year 9 draft learning areas for Terms 2, 3, and 4 will be available at the start of each term.
We’re continuing to develop resources across learning areas and years and will release more resources regularly throughout 2026 and beyond.
These resources will be reviewed and updated to align with your feedback and the full and final National Curriculum when it is released in mid-2026.
We take an iterative approach to all teaching resources development and continually work to improve the support we provide to school leaders and teachers.
Tell us what you think#
We encourage schools to engage with the resources and provide us with feedback, so we can continue to improve further resources to be released throughout the year. In particular, we’d like to hear how these resources support schools to deliver a year-by-year curriculum and how students respond to them.
