The Awards for Gifted Learners offers ākonga, from early childhood to school leaving age, an opportunity to extend and challenge themselves in areas in which they excel.

Applications can be for an individual or a group of learners. The awards can provide funding of up to $2,500 per individual or $5,000 per group, for a 12-month period maximum.

“This award opened a door to writing and performing that I never knew I could achieve. With this, I can put my passion for youth empowerment into practice. To let them know that they don’t need to be handed a mic on a stage that isn’t fitted for them. I hope to be an outlet for young Pacific leaders who need the support and furthermore see many more young Pasifika and Māori students achieve and speak their truth through their own passions” – Eniselini, a student at Marcelin College Auckland. Eniselini is a member of the 617 Poets Collective who were recipients of the Awards for Gifted Learners. The award enabled the group to design a bespoke, spoken word show for their community.
