Draft content for learning areas now available#

Last week, we released the updated curriculum content for Years 0 to 10 English, Te Reo Rangatira, Mathematics and Statistics, and Pāngarau. We are now making draft content for Years 0 to 10 learning areas and wāhanga ako available for schools and kura to provide feedback on. You can do this between now and 24 April 2026.

The draft learning areas being released for consultation in Years 0 to 10 are:

  • Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Health
  • The Arts
  • Learning Languages
  • Technology.

A draft of The New Zealand Curriculum | Te Mātaiaho, the framework for the New Zealand Curriculum, is also being made available.

Once they are finalised, there will also be:

  • the draft wāhanga ako for Te Marautanga O Aotearoa – Pūtaiao, Te Ao Māori, Waiora, Toi Ihiihi, Hāngarau, Ngā Reo, and Te Reo Pākeha
  • the draft framework for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Timeline of curriculum content implementation#

The following list sets out when content will start being used in schools and kura.

  • 2027 – Years 0 to 8 content for Science and Pūtaiao, Social Sciences and Te Ao Māori, Health and Physical Education and Waiora will need to be used from Term 1, 2027.
  • 2028 – Years 0 to 8 content for The Arts and Toi Ihiihi, Technology and Hāngarau, Learning Languages and Ngā Reo, and Te Reo Pākeha (Te Marautanga o Aotearoa only) will need to be used from Term 1, 2028.
  • All Years 9 to 10 learning areas and wāhanga ako will be used from Term 1, 2027.

Full guidance will be available in mid-November.

Schools are not expected to make any changes to their reporting before Term 1, 2026.
