The Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships for the 2024 academic year are now open for applications!
Ngarimu scholarships
The Ngarimu scholarships recognise excellence in education, performance, and achievement, and are awarded to exceptional ākonga Māori who are enrolling in or undertaking university study or vocational education and training.
Applications for the Ngarimu scholarships are open to ākonga Māori who demonstrate characteristics that align with the values of the 28th (Māori) Battalion, and have a desire to give back to their communities, whānau, hapū and iwi.
These prestigious scholarships are funded by the Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board with the purpose of honouring Victoria Cross recipient Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and the 28th (Māori) Battalion.
In 2024, the Board intends to award nine scholarships to support Māori in education, and these include:
- Three Vocational Education and Training scholarships, each valued at $10,000 for study of a minimum of 120 credits at level 5 to 7 non degree
- Three Undergraduate scholarships, each valued up to $30,000: $10,000 per year of full-time study for up to three years
- One Master scholarship valued up to $20,000: $10,000 per year of full-time study for up to two years
- One Master of Education research scholarship valued up to $20,000: $10,000 per year of full-time study, for up to two years
- One Doctoral scholarship valued up to $40,000: $20,000 per year of full-time study for up to two years.
Ngarimu Vocational Education and Training (VET) Scholarships
This is the third year the Ngarimu Vocational Education and Training (VET) Scholarships have been available. To be eligible for these scholarships ākonga must be enrolling in or studying towards a certificate or diploma of at least 120 credits at levels 5 to 7 (non-degree).
How to apply
Criteria
These scholarships are open to ākonga Māori who are studying or enrolling in tertiary study and meet the requirements as mentioned on the Ngarimu Scholarship information page. You do not need to be a descendant of a member of the 28 (Māori) Battalion or whakapapa to Ngāti Porou.

Ngarimu Video Competition for ākonga in Year 7 – 13
Submissions are open for the 2023 Ngarimu Video Competition!
The competition is funded by the Ngarimu VC and 28 (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board for the purpose of providing ākonga Māori with an opportunity to practise storytelling and research, and to learn about the history of the 28th (Māori) Battalion.
How to apply
Ākonga can submit a three-to-five-minute video in English or te reo Māori and be in to win one of six prizes for themselves and their school or kura.
