This index page provides statistics on children's participation in ECE including tables on prior participation rates of children starting school, enrolments, and average hours spent in ECE.

The Pivot Table spreadsheet allows you to adjust your table by any combination of variables. It includes the option of displaying number of enrolments in early learning by service type and regional type variables (including Territorial Authority or Education Region), and to filter by variables such as Ethnic Group. (Requires MS Excel version 2007 or later.)

API Early Childhood Centres and Schools | Education Counts(external link)

An Application Programming Interface (API) has been developed to provide another way to access details on early childhood education services from the Early Childhood Education Directory. Details are included on the data.govt.nz site regarding downloading this dataset, as well as further information related to using APIs(external link) to facilitate more in-depth querying capabilities(external link).

Please note, the Minister will only consider licensed early childhood services when assessing demand, forecast growth, supply and need for the purpose of network approval.

Statistics New Zealand

NZ.Stat (stats.govt.nz) | Table viewer(external link)

An open (free) online data tool which contains useful information including Census data, ethnicity, age, etc. NZ.Stat allows you to create tables from large datasets and customise the variables you want. NZ.Stat provides a user guide, and quick guide to get started. Download a table in Excel (up to 100,000 cells) or CSV format (up to a million cells).

Zoning data

Zoning data can be obtained from District Councils to understand areas designated as residential, commercial, rural or mixed from the relevant district plan.
