Who can get support#

Your child may be able to get support from a speech-language therapist (SLT) if you are concerned that, for example:

  • your child’s talking is very hard to understand in any of the languages they speak
  • your child appears to be developing more slowly than others of the same age
  • your child finds it hard to follow verbal instructions
  • your child finds it hard to participate in conversations with other people or in groups
  • they have difficulty getting words out, get stuck on words or have a stutter
  • your child has a problem with their voice that makes it hard for them to talk.

How an SLT can support your child#

SLTs can support your child to communicate more effectively in their daily life. They will also support you and your child’s teachers to learn how to support your child’s communication.

The SLT will talk with you and your child’s teachers about the best ways to support them. A plan could include:

  • cultural support
  • ideas for how your child can be supported by their teacher
  • ideas for how you can support your child at home.

How to get support#

If you think your child needs support with their communication skills, you may find it useful to talk to their teacher first.
