Objectives of the CoREs policy#

The policy supports high-performing researchers in the tertiary education sector produce research that is:

  • strategically focused and linked to New Zealand’s future economic, environmental and societal needs
  • of excellent quality, and supports innovative research and research training environments
  • transferable, so new knowledge is used in teaching programmes and shared through outreach and engagement with end-users.

CoREs selection process and changes to policy#

The CoREs selection process is fully competitive. The latest selection process included several changes to the CoREs policy, agreed by Cabinet in May 2019.

CoREs are selected every 8 years based on criteria in the CoREs Funding Determination. This process is managed by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).
