Objectives of the CoREs policy
The policy supports high-performing researchers in the tertiary education sector produce research that is:
- strategically focused and linked to New Zealand’s future economic, environmental and societal needs
- of excellent quality, and supports innovative research and research training environments
- transferable, so new knowledge is used in teaching programmes and shared through outreach and engagement with end-users.
CoREs selection process and changes to policy
The CoREs selection process is fully competitive. The latest selection process included several changes to the CoREs policy, agreed by Cabinet in May 2019.
CoREs are selected every 8 years based on criteria in the CoREs Funding Determination. This process is managed by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).
