A consistent, streamlined process#

We’re bringing all parts of a school property project together in one streamlined process. This means fewer delays, better results, and schools getting what they need. We’re rolling out this approach from 1 July 2026.

Planning fit-for-purpose projects#

We sit down with your school to develop a plan that meets your needs. By working together, we make sure property projects reflect your school’s learning style, culture and identity.

Planning does not guarantee funding, but if funding is agreed, work can start straight away.

Buildings and layouts that work for most schools#

We’ve worked with experts to develop a set of standard school buildings, materials, and classroom layouts. Evidence tells us these designs work well for most schools and offer students and teachers warm, dry, safe and fit-for-purpose spaces.

Our standard buildings are modular, adaptable and easier to build and look after. They can be modified for primary and secondary schools, learning support, and kura. We’ve also standardised a set of classroom layouts. We’ll work with schools to plan the right layout that suits their different teaching and learning styles.

Materials and building systems are part of the package

Having a range of standardised materials and building systems:

  • makes it easier to operate and maintain schools
  • improves quality and consistency
  • makes it easier for suppliers
  • saves time and money.

Schools have choices

Standard does not mean identical. Although critical parts of the design are fixed, schools still have choices over items such as materials, cladding, finishes, layouts and other features, so that they will reflect their identity and community.

Robust design standards#

All work on New Zealand school property projects must meet New Zealand design standards. These standards help make sure our schools are safe, fit-for-purpose and sustainable.
