Support package for schools#
On 20 April 2026 the Government announced temporary and targeted fuel support for schools.
Immediate fuel relief for school communities – Beehive.govt.nz
We are working to implement those initiatives and will continue to communicate through bulletins and directly as needed.
Mileage rates for relief teachers#
We are working with NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA Te Wehengarua to temporarily increase the transport assistance provided for relieving teachers in short-term positions.
Once confirmed, the allowance will increase from 20 April 2026 to:
- $0.83 per kilometre for motor cars
- $0.31 per kilometre for motorcycles.
The increase will apply until whichever of the following happens first:
- for 12 months from 20 April 2026
- there are 4 consecutive weeks where the average price of 91 Octane fuel is below $3 per litre.
All other terms and conditions for mileage allowance claims and reimbursements are not changing.
U1 and U2 schools#
This announcement included a $2,500 grant for state and state-integrated schools with fewer than 100 students.
This will be paid as a one-off payment via Pourato.
Diesel boilers#
If your school is using a diesel boiler for heating and has no alternative heating sources, your property advisor has sent you an email outlining the replacement process.
If you believe you should have received this email but haven’t, contact your local Ministry office.
School transport conveyance allowance#
From 20 April 2026, all Ministry conveyance allowance rates will temporarily increase by approximately 30%.
This includes:
Daily school bus conveyance allowances
Technology class conveyance allowances
The increase will apply until whichever of the following happens first:
- for 12 months from 20 April 2026
- there are 4 consecutive weeks where the average price of 91 Octane fuel is below $3.00 per litre.
The increase will be applied automatically. Caregivers and schools do not need to submit an application or request.
