Across the motu, all state and state-integrated schools and kura with students in Years 1 to 8 will have access to learning support coordinators (LSCs) by 2028. Two Auckland schools talk to Tukutuku Kōrero | Education Gazette about how LSCs have already made a positive impact for ākonga and kaimahi just weeks into the new school year.

In Hamilton, LSC Michelle Macintyre’s investigation into how the learning of neurodivergent ākonga can be celebrated has resulted in an inclusive, strengths-based assessment. And in Wairarapa, LSC and teacher Rachel Harvey leads a literacy programme that has become a  model for secondary schools nationwide.

Out of the classroom and into the playground or sports field, we look at how a few simple adaptions can make movement and play fun for everyone.

And we meet Marshall, an ākonga who had disengaged from learning. Supported by Te Kahu Tōī | Intensive Wraparound Service, his schools, his whānau and a strengths-based approach, Marshall is now proudly celebrating his academic and sporting achievements.
