Key dates

Applications open 1 October every second year.

Applications close 30 October.

You will be notified on 29 November.

We do not accept late applications.

The next application period for the New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Tutor scholarship will begin on 1 October 2026 for students to start studying in 2027.

What the scholarship covers#

The scholarship supports a Certificate in Deaf Studies: Teaching NZSL at Victoria University of Wellington. You must enrol in this course to apply for the scholarship.

Certificate in Deaf Studies: Teaching New Zealand Sign Language – Victoria University

The course is part-time over 2 years.

Who can apply#

To apply you must:

  • be accepted into the Victoria University of Wellington Certificate in Deaf Studies – Teaching New Zealand Sign Language
  • be enrolled in the full programme of study (studying 3 courses a year for 2 years)
  • be fluent in New Zealand Sign Language
  • be a New Zealand citizen or have rights to reside and work in New Zealand indefinitely or permanently
  • not be repeating a failed course.

Priority for some applicants#

We will give priority to applicants who:

  • are Deaf and hard of hearing
  • live in areas where more NZSL tutors are needed
  • are of Māori or Pasifika descent.

Applications are now closed.

Your application must include:

  • application questionnaire
  • your resume/CV.

You can also attach a cover letter and/or letters of support.

After you apply#

The notification date for the scholarship will be before the university’s deadline to withdraw from the course. If we don't award you a scholarship you will need to either self-fund or withdraw from the course.

The decision to grant or not grant a scholarship is final.
