What we provide funding for#

Schools and kura must use pay equity funding to apply the pay equity outcomes and new pay rates resulting from changes to settled collective agreements.

We provide funding for:

• pay equity funding: employees covered by the pay equity settlements who are on a relevant payroll designation code in EdPay
• collective agreement funding: employees who are covered by a settled collective agreement or promulgated individual employment agreement
• tiaki allowance funding: provided where employees are receiving either an occasional or frequent tiaki allowance

If your school or kura does not pay covered employees through EdPay, we will contact you for information so we can calculate your funding.

Current settlements#

We currently provide funding for the following pay equity settlements:

• teacher aides' settlement
• administration support staff in schools' settlement
• kaiārahi i te reo settlement
• librarians and library assistants' settlement
• science technicians' settlement
• therapists' settlement
• and all settled non-teaching collective agreements since 2019.

How we calculate settlement funding#

We use your payroll data from the last 12 months to calculate the estimated funding we pay. 

To work out a funding estimate for each employee we:

• take the printed rate for the agreement the employee is on, and
• subtract their pre-settlement hourly rate from it, then
• multiply this total by the number of hours they worked.

We then apply a small amount to account for ACC.

Wash-up adjustment#

An annual wash-up adjustment is completed in April for the preceding years' confirmed payroll data. 

• We compare the estimated funding we have paid you to what your funding entitlement is, based on actual hours worked by your non-teaching support staff.
• The wash-up adjustment can be additional funding we will pay you or funding we will recover.
• You will see your wash-up adjustment in your Quarter 2 funding letter. 

Pay equity funding instalment schedule#

We pay estimated settlement funding instalments on:

• 1 January for Quarter 1
• 1 April for Quarter 2
• 1 July for Quarter 3
• 1 October for Quarter 4.

Before you receive a funding instalment, you will get a letter via the Secure Data Portal. This breaks down the funding by agreement type.

We cannot provide a breakdown for each of your staff members.
