LSC conference

We invite LSCs across the country to a 1-day conference on 10 June 2026.

This is a free, online event. You will hear inspiring speakers, participate in workshops and connect with peers.

The conference is open to:

  • current in-school and cluster-based LSCs working across schools and kura throughout New Zealand
  • LSCs working in kaupapa Māori and Māori-medium settings (Ngā Kura ā Iwi- and Te Rūnanga Nui‑affiliated schools and Kura Motuhake)
  • representatives from schools receiving their in‑school LSC entitlement in 2027 and 2028
  • principals and others working in learning support, such as SENCOs and RTLBs.

Register and learn more on the conference website.

2026 learning support coordinator conference

If the conference is oversubscribed, priority will be given to currently employed LSCs.

What in-school LSCs do#

Learning support coordinators (LSCs) are experienced, registered teachers with a current full practising certificate. They:

  • support students to get the right help earlier
  • better support teachers to meet diverse learning needs
  • make it easier for families to understand and access learning support at school.

Which schools are eligible for in-school LSCs#

The new LSC staffing entitlement is for schools and kura with learners in Years 1 to 8 that do not currently have access to an LSC.

Schools that access LSCs as part of a cluster will continue to do that.

The document below sets out how access to in-school LSCs will be rolled out.

In-school LSC role information#

Download detailed information about the in-school LSC role, how it fits into the learning support system and suggested interview questions for schools who are recruiting.

Induction for learning support coordinators#

LSC induction courses are available to support LSCs to perform their role effectively.

Anyone with an Education Sector Login (ESL) can access the courses, including all in-school LSCs, cluster-based LSCs, and SENCOs.

  • 3 induction courses are available.
  • Each course includes 3 modules.
  • Each module will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

All courses can be accessed through our Education Learning Management System (LMS).

Our LSC induction information sheet includes access information, who to contact for support, course information and questions and answers.

Professional learning and development for LSCs#

Professional learning and development (PLD) is being developed to support LSCs in their role.

Two courses are available to strengthen confidence and capability in specific practice areas:

  • Tilting the Seesaw for Learning Support Coordinators – Autism New Zealand
  • Kete into Practice – FASD CAN (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder – Care Action Network).

This PLD is designed for LSCs who are:

  • in school or cluster based
  • seeking to build understanding of neurodiversity and trauma informed practice
  • supporting learners with complex learning, behavioural or regulatory needs.

Completing the LSC induction beforehand is strongly encouraged but not a pre-requisite for this PLD. More information, including how to register, is included in the fact sheet below.

Upcoming PLD#

Details about new PLD will be shared as it becomes available.

Comprehensive PLD is being developed for introduction from Term 3 and into 2027.

The Ministry released a request for proposals (RFP) for learning support coordinator PLD on 30 March 2026 via the Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS). Make sure you are registered with GETS to receive notifications about the RFP.
