Our cyber assistant tool assesses kura and schools’ cyber security, safety and privacy, and provides an action plan.

The pilot for the cyber assistant tool is now complete and work on the next phase is underway.

Identify cyber security threats#

Schools face a variety of cyber security threats that require them to make updates to systems, review risks, and maintain good security settings. This can be hard to prioritise, especially with limited budgets.

The cyber assistant tool can help your school improve your cyber security, cyber safety, and online privacy practices. It can:

  • help you identify potential weaknesses and areas for improvement
  • provide a detailed understanding of the current state of your school's cyber security, cyber safety and online privacy risk posture
  • provide you with a targeted action plan that lines up with best practice and helps prioritise resources.

Own your online website has a free self-assessment that takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.

Our cyber assistant tool#

We piloted a tool called the cyber assistant tool in 2024 and 2025.

The pilot for the tool ended in May 2025. Feedback was positive. Work is now underway on the next phase.

Once the tool goes live, it will be available for all schools and kura to use.

While work on the next phase of the tool is underway, key questions from the pilot are available should your school wish to complete a manual assessment.

Who should complete the self-assessment#

Any staff member that has knowledge about the school’s policies and processes can complete the self-assessment.
