This circular is about the details of the variation to the settlement of the School Caretakers’, Cleaners’, Canteen and Ground Staff Collective Agreement 2022-2024.
This circular does not replace any other.
It is intended for Presiding Members of School Boards of all state and state-integrated primary, area and secondary schools.

Note the details of this variation, which provides two additional lump sum payments in line with the Public Sector Pay Adjustment process and extends coverage of the School Caretakers’, Cleaners’, and Canteen Staff Collective Agreement to ground staff employed in secondary and area schools.
Introduction
On 6 June 2023, the School Caretakers’, Cleaners’, Canteen and Ground Staff Collective Agreement 2022-2024 was varied in agreement with E tū.
The term of the agreement remains as 14 November 2022 to 13 November 2024.
This circular provides a summary of the changes in the variation.
The full collective agreement can be downloaded from the Ministry of Education’s website and printed copies will be available from the New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA).
Key features of the settlement
Lump sum payments
As a member-only benefit, a one-off gross payment of $750 will be made to E tū members employed as at 1 December 2022. This will be pro-rated for part-time and casual employees.
A one-off gross payment of $500 will be made to all employees bound by this agreement employed as at 1 December 2023. This will be pro-rated for part-time and casual staff.
Extension of coverage of the School Caretakers', Cleaners' and Canteen Staff Collective Agreement to ground staff
Ground staff employed in secondary and area schools are now covered by the renewed School Caretakers’, Cleaners’, Canteen and Ground Staff Collective Agreement 2022-2024.

Individual Employment Agreement (IEA)
A new IEA has been promulgated by the Secretary for Education on 6 June 2023, following the signing of the varied collective agreement. Employees who are not union members will need to sign a new IEA to access the new terms and conditions.
IEA for School Caretakers, Cleaners, Canteen and Ground Staff
The IEA is only valid if both the employer and the employee sign it and cannot be before 6 June 2023.
Note that if the Board and the employee do not sign the new IEA then the new provisions will not apply. Pay rates and other provisions will remain the same, as provided in the now expired collective agreement.
In the event a Board has concerns and/or questions regarding its employment arrangements with individual employees, the Board should contact its NZSTA adviser or its own employment adviser.
