Rapid payments process#
Rapid payments are an optional way some sensitive claims can be settled quickly without the need for a full assessment.
Two new rapid payment options#
- Rapid payments for claimants who attended Waimokoia/Mt Wellington Residential School.
 - Prioritised settlement payments for claimants who are terminally ill.

Once we have finished researching McKenzie Residential School and Campbell Park School, rapid payments will be available for those schools.
Survivors who have serious violent and sexual offences#
On 9 May 2025, the Government announced changes to redress processes. This includes a new process for claims from survivors who are also serious violent and/or sexual offenders, and who have been sentenced to 5 or more years in prison. Survivors who meet these criteria will not be able to access financial redress. Survivors will still be able to receive wellbeing support and an apology, if appropriate.
All survivors who have lodged claims from 9 May 2025 onwards are required to complete the consent and declaration form. The sensitive claims team will provide the forms to claimants who have lodged an eligible claim with the Ministry.
Key documents#

Research findings#
Waimokoia was open between 1960 and 2010. We have researched the school and made standard findings about what was happening there each decade that it was open.
Note that some of the findings we have made might be upsetting to read about.
Rapid payment offers#
Rapid payment offers for claimants who attended Waimokoia/Mt Wellington include:
- a financial payment (amounts vary depending on the decade you attended Waimokoia/Mt Wellington. You can see the amounts in the rapid payments information sheet above)
 - an apology from the Secretary for Education

If you attended Waimokoia and want to consider a rapid payment, download the information sheet from the key documents and find out more about the Waimokoia rapid payment process.
McKenzie Residential School and Campbell Park School#
We are also researching McKenzie Residential School and Campbell Park School. Once our research about these schools is finished, people who attended one of these schools will also be able to choose a rapid payment.
These might look different to what is offered for Waimokoia Residential School because rapid payments will be based on standard findings for each school.
Prioritised payments for claimants who are terminally ill#
Prioritised settlement payments are an option for any claimant who is terminally ill and not expected to survive longer than 12 months, regardless of any available medical treatment.
A prioritised settlement payment offer includes:
- a financial payment of $10,000 to settle your claim
 - an apology from the Secretary for Education
 - reimbursement of actual and reasonable legal fees, if applicable.

Download the information sheet and read more about the prioritised settlement payment option.
