What you need to know#
We are reviewing the standards that apply to initial teacher education (ITE) programme standards – the ITE programme requirements. ITE programmes are designed to prepare new teachers to meet students' learning needs when they start teaching. The standards go across early childhood, school and specialist education settings. They also recognise that teachers will continue to learn and develop throughout their careers.
The current ITE programme requirements were set in 2019. This review is an opportunity to:
- set out how ITE fits within the wider education system alongside other standards, regulation, workforce needs, and early career support
- align ITE programme requirements with the 2026 Standards for the Teaching Profession
- align with changes to curriculum, assessment, and aromatawai
- reflect what different learning environments like schools and early learning services expect from new teachers
- reflect what we know about quality teaching and learning in a changing world.
ITE providers should continue to engage with the Teaching Council on programme approval, monitoring, and review processes
