This was a result of a Budget 2025 decision to reinvest their funding in Learning Support.
No Kāhui Ako roles will be funded by the Ministry after the date of disestablishment (28 January 2026). There will be no ongoing provision for resources or staffing after 27 January 2026.
Kāhui Ako teachers who roles originally extended beyond 28 January 2026 will have salary protection as specified in their Collective Agreements. Salary protection will be for 12 months or until the end of their fixed-term contract if that is earlier. There is no expectation that individuals with salary protection should continue with any of the duties previously associated with the Kāhui ako role.
Salary protection does not apply to anyone who started their role after 22 May 2025. This is the date when the disestablishment was announced. Those individuals do not have salary protection for 2026.
