Regulatory functions for early childhood education services, private schools and school hostels will be moved from us to ERO from 1 September 2026.
Following the Education and Training (System Reform) Amendment Act 2026, which came into force on 6 July 2026, an Order in Council today confirmed the 1 September starting date. This is published on the New Zealand Legislation website.
The change is part of wider education system reforms. We will continue to work closely with ERO to support the sector with a smooth transition. Background information about these changes is on our website.
