The purpose of the scholarships is to honour Victoria Cross recipient Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and the 28th (Māori) Battalion.
Ngarimu Vocational Education and Training (VET)
The Ngarimu VET Scholarships recognise excellence in education, performance, and achievement, and are awarded to exceptional ākonga Māori who are enrolling in or undertaking an eligible vocational education and training course.
Scholarships available
3 Ngarimu VET scholarships are available for 2025. Each are valued up to $10,000 for study of a minimum of 120 credits at level 4 to 7 non-degree.
Ākonga undertaking study at level 4 must have completed years 1 and 2 and are enrolling in a subsequent year of their apprenticeship.
Applications can be submitted in English or te reo Māori.
Closing date
Applications close on Sunday 1 September 2024.
Ngarimu Video and Waiata competitions for ākonga in Years 7 – 13
The Ngarimu video competition provides ākonga Māori with an opportunity to practise storytelling and research, and to learn about the 28th (Māori) Battalion history.
The Ngarimu Waiata composition competition was developed to encourage ākonga Māori to explore their creativity and increase their understanding of the immense contributions made by the 28th (Māori) Battalion during World War II.
Prizes
Ākonga can submit entries in te reo Māori or in English, and be in to win 1 of 6 prizes for themselves and their school or kura:
