Curriculum update

About the latest release#

This latest release includes the first final subjects developed through Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, along with additional subjects from The New Zealand Curriculum.

More subjects across both pathways will be published later this month. A small number of remaining subjects will follow later this year as consultation and publication processes are completed.

When fully released, 35 subjects will be available to mokopuna in Tau 11–13, creating the most extensive senior secondary curriculum offering ever developed through Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Schools and kura can also access information about implementation support, resources, and professional learning and development on the Years 11 to 13 curriculum page.

Consultation on new Hangarau subject#

With today’s release, the draft Hangarau subject has been published for consultation, which will be open until 18 November.

The subject will support mokopuna to explore how tools, materials, processes, systems, and innovations can be used to respond to authentic needs and challenges.

Drawing on indigenous knowledge and evolving mātauranga, students will apply hangarau practices to develop sustainable, culturally grounded solutions that contribute to the aspirations of whānau, hapū, and iwi.

Hangarau will provide pathways into areas including:

  • design
  • technology
  • engineering
  • construction
  • food
  • health and wellbeing
  • the creative industries
  • kaupapa Māori development.
