In this issue#

Following Matariki Mā Puanga, this issue of Education Gazette is inspired by a special focus on Te Taiao, STEM and Mātauranga Māori. We share stories of learners and kaiako imagining and building a better future – for their communities, for the planet and for all living things.

You’ll journey from the subantarctic islands with Moana Lucre-Hedger to student-designed cities full of flying treehouses and insect sanctuaries. You’ll see tamariki using Minecraft to model sustainable farming and meet rangatahi shaping new futures in STEM and Mātauranga Māori. We’re proud to share insights from Dr Rangi Mātāmua – the voice of Matariki in Aotearoa – who sheds light on the broad opportunities for meaningful knowledge-sharing, particularly the science of our seasons and our stars. This year’s Matariki theme is inclusion, embracing diversity, and celebrating together, which you will also see reflected. Read about the trauma-informed approach of an alternative education provider in Porirua, the collaborative support shown through a He Pikorua journey in Nelson, and a heartwarming carving project at Alexandra Primary that celebrates neurodiversity, identity and belonging.
