What the updated curriculum means for students#
The updated curriculum provides a clearer and more connected learning journey through the senior secondary years.
Students will have greater clarity about what they are learning, what comes next and how their learning connects to further study, training and employment.
The curriculum will also be closely aligned with the new senior secondary qualifications:
- From 2029 – New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) for Year 12 students.
- From 2030 – New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE) for Year 13 students.
When the changes will happen#
Students currently in Year 9 will be the first to study the updated senior secondary curriculum when they enter Year 11 in 2028.
From 2027, schools and kura will receive resources, guidance and professional learning to support implementation.
