What the changes are#
From 1 January 2027, schools and kura must provide parents and whānau | families with 2 reports each year. These reports will include the student's:
- results from assessments or aromatawai
- progress against strands in the English and mathematics learning areas and/or whenu | strands in Te Reo Rangatira and pāngarau wāhanga ako
- progress and achievement in reading and writing or pānui and tuhituhi, which replaces literacy or te reo Matatini
- attendance (except for distance schools)
- next learning steps.
They will also include:
- any relevant common progress descriptors
- information about how the school is supporting the student if they are well below curriculum expectations.
These changes align with the report guidance released earlier this year, which many schools are already using.
Some kura boards have another year to get ready for these changes. Requirements will come into effect for them from 1 January 2028.
Why these changes have been made#
Parents and whānau need clear, consistent information about their child’s progress and achievement over time. At the moment, reports can vary significantly between schools. This can make it harder for some parents and whānau to understand how their child is progressing and achieving.
Information for schools and kura#
We are updating the guidance and templates that schools use to report to parents and whānau. Many schools are already using this guidance. See the guides and templates:
The school planning and reporting framework
Schools can choose how they present the information and can include extra information if they want to.
