About bird flu#

Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease of birds that has been spreading around the world. It has been detected in wild birds in New Zealand but so far there is no evidence of any mass deaths in wildlife.

New Zealand is well prepared to respond quickly to bird flu. Bird flu is a very low risk to human health.

Tips for schools and early learning services#

Keep your distance#

Stay away from sick or dead wildlife and keep children away. Keep pets away too. 

Keep clean#

Wash your hands and practice good hygiene after being outdoors. 

When to report#

If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds in a group:

  • don’t handle or move the birds
  • report it immediately.

Disposing of birds#

If fewer than 3 dead birds are found at your school or service, you may need to dispose of them.
