About bird flu#
Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease of birds that has been spreading around the world. It has been detected in wild birds in New Zealand but so far there is no evidence of any mass deaths in wildlife.
New Zealand is well prepared to respond quickly to bird flu. Bird flu is a very low risk to human health.

Keep your distance#
Stay away from sick or dead wildlife and keep children away. Keep pets away too.
Keep clean#
Wash your hands and practice good hygiene after being outdoors.
When to report#
If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds in a group:
- do not handle or move the birds
- report it immediately.

Disposing of birds#
If fewer than 3 dead birds are found at your school or service, you may need to dispose of them.

Have personal protective equipment available#
Keep basic personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, face masks and eye protection readily available in case a dead bird needs to be disposed of. Follow the MPI guidance for dealing with sick or dead birds during an H5 bird flu outbreak.
