The Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships awarded to exceptional ākonga Māori who are undertaking or enrolling in: 

  • university
  • wānanga
  • vocational education and training programmes.

Applications are open to ākonga Māori who demonstrate characteristics that align with the values of the 28th (Māori) Battalion and have a desire to give back to their communities, whānau, hapū and iwi.

Available for 2026 are:

  • 3 undergraduate scholarships, each valued up to $30,000 – $10,000 per year of full-time study for up to 3 years
  • a master’s scholarship valued up to $20,000 – $10,000 per year of full-time study for up to 2 years
  • a Master of Education Research Scholarship valued up to $20,000 – $10,000 per year of full-time study for up to 2 years
  • a doctoral scholarship valued up to $40,000 – $20,000 per year of full-time study for up to 2 years
  • 3 Vocational Education and Training (VET) Scholarships, each valued at $10,000 for study of a minimum of 120 credits at New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) level 4 to 7 non-degree.

These prestigious scholarships are funded by the Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board to honour Victoria Cross recipient Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and the 28th (Māori) Battalion.

All scholarship applicants will be assessed based on their ability to describe ngā āhuatanga (characteristics) they possess that are similar to those of the 28th (Māori) Battalion soldiers.
