Ngarimu scholarships#

The Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial scholarships honour the legacy of Victoria Cross recipient Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and the 28th (Māori) Battalion. They recognise ākonga Māori who carry forward this legacy through determination, integrity, and a commitment to their people.

Open to ākonga Māori pursuing study at university, wānanga, or in vocational education and training, the Ngarimu scholarships support ākonga to build knowledge, develop as leaders, and give back to their whānau, hapū, iwi, and communities.

Scholarships available for 2027 include:

  • 4 undergraduate scholarships, each valued up to $30,000 ($10,000 per year for up to 3 years)
  • 3 master’s scholarship, each valued up to $20,000 ($10,000 per year for up to 2 years)
  • 1 Master of Education research scholarship, valued up to $20,000 ($10,000 per year for up to 2 years)
  • 1 doctoral scholarship, valued up to $40,000 ($20,000 per year for up to 2 years)
  • 5 vocational education and training (VET) scholarships, each valued at $10,000 for study at NZQA Levels 4 to 7.

Ngarimu competitions#

The Ngarimu video and waiata composition competitions encourage ākonga Māori in Years 7 to 13 to give voice to the stories and legacy of the 28th (Māori) Battalion.

By producing a short film or composing a waiata, in te reo Māori or in English/Bilingual, ākonga can express creativity, share their knowledge and personal connections to the 28th (Māori) Battalion, and bring history to life. Entries can be submitted individually or as a rōpū.

12 prizes are available for both ākonga and their kura.
