Information about this consultation#

Enrolment schemes are needed in the Wakatipu area to help manage enrolments across schools.

It’s important that we hear and understand community perspectives before we establish these new schemes. We especially want to hear about the practical impacts and whether the new boundaries accurately reflect the area.

Overview of enrolment schemes#

If overcrowding occurs or is likely to occur at a state school, we must establish an enrolment scheme for the school. This is to:

  • help the school board to manage the risk of overcrowding
  • provide a fair and transparent process for enrolment
  • make sure we are making the best use of schooling facilities across the network of local schools.

Read about the purpose and principles of an enrolment scheme on the New Zealand Legislation website.

Entitlement to enrol#

Introducing enrolment schemes will mean that choice becomes more limited in the Wakatipu area. All families will be entitled to attend a school that is reasonably convenient to them, but they won’t have the same entitlement to enrol at other state schools.

Students who are already enrolled at one of the schools before home zones have been put in place or changed are entitled to stay at their current school.

Additional entitlement to enrol#

Changing existing home zones can be hard for current families with younger siblings that may be impacted when they start school.

Changes to the legislation (Education and Training Act 2020) now allow us to include 'grandparenting' clauses. This means that provided certain criteria are met, younger siblings may attend the same school as an older brother and sister who is currently enrolled.

Impact on school transport assistance#

This consultation process is about enrolment schemes, which decides whether a student can enrol at a school. A student’s eligibility to enrol may be different to their eligibility for school transport assistance.

Information about the proposed changes#

Before you take part in the consultation process, look at the maps and overview information available.

As part of this consultation, we are interested in understanding the impact of grandparenting clauses – so even if you don’t have a comment about the boundary areas, we encourage you to participate in consultation so we can gather a full picture about families that qualify for grandparenting clauses if these are included.
