Purpose of this consultation#
This consultation is about a proposed change to Upper Hutt School's enrolment scheme.
We want to hear and understand community views before we make any changes, especially about the proposed home zone and how it would work in practice.
Read the information before you participate in the consultation process. It includes a map and a written description of the proposed enrolment scheme.
The commencement date will be confirmed.
Enrolment schemes#
Enrolment schemes help school boards manage enrolments and make sure children living in a school's home zone can enrol at the school.
The purpose of an enrolment scheme for a state school is to:
- help the board to manage the risk of overcrowding
- provide a fair and transparent process for enrolment
- make sure we are making the best use of schooling facilities across the network of local schools.
What is changing#
A key part of an enrolment scheme is the home zone. The proposed amendment to the home zone for Upper Hutt School sets out a geographic area from within which students would have a right to enrol at the school.
Entitlement to enrol#
All students who live within the relevant home zone of Upper Hutt School will be entitled to attend the school.
All students who are already enrolled at a school before a home zone is put in or changed are entitled to stay at the school.
Students who live outside the home zone may be able to enrol if there are out-of-zone places available and their application is accepted.
The school's board will advertise:
- the number of out-of-zone places
- deadlines and procedures for applications
- the dates their ballots will be held.
