Purpose of this consultation#

This consultation is about a proposed new enrolment scheme for Maheno School.

We want to hear and understand community views before we put the scheme in place at Maheno School, especially about the proposed home zone and how it would work in practice. Read the information before you participate in the consultation process. It includes a map and a written description of the proposed new enrolment scheme.

The enrolment scheme is proposed to commence at the start of Term 1, 2027.

About enrolment schemes#

Enrolment schemes help school boards manage enrolments and make sure children living in a school's home zone can enrol at the school.

The purpose of an enrolment scheme for a state school is to:

  • help the board to manage the risk of overcrowding
  • provide a fair and transparent process for enrolment
  • make sure we are making the best use of schooling facilities across the network of local schools.

What is changing#

A key part of an enrolment scheme is the home zone. The proposed home zone for Maheno School sets out a geographic area from within which students would have a right to enrol at the school.

All students who are already enrolled at a school before a home zone is put in place or changed are entitled to stay at the school.

Entitlement to enrol#

All students who live in the home zone of Maheno School will be entitled to attend the school.

Students who live outside the home zone may be able to enrol if there are out-of-zone places available and their application is accepted.

The school's board will advertise:

  • the number of out-of-zone places
  • deadlines and procedures for applications
  • the dates their ballots will be held.

Additional entitlement to enrol#

The additional entitlement to enrol is being considered for Maheno School enrolment scheme.

This means that a child who lives outside the new home zone may still be able to enrol if they have a sibling who is already enrolled at the school when the new enrolment scheme comes into effect.

This provision helps keep siblings together at the same school and reduces the impact of home zone changes on existing families.
