Overview#
We want to hear and understand community perspectives before we establish changes to the enrolment scheme at Craighead Diocesan School, especially the design of the enrolment categories and priorities.
This enrolment scheme amendment will assist the Craighead Diocesan School Board to manage a situation where there is more demand for enrolment than there are places available within the maximum roll and to provide a fair and transparent process for enrolment.
The current enrolment scheme was approved in 2006 and was last updated in 2008.
The amended enrolment scheme for Craighead Diocesan School is proposed to commence from 1 January 2027.
All students who are already enrolled at Craighead Diocesan School before the enrolment scheme changes commence are entitled to stay at Craighead Diocesan School.
Proposed enrolment scheme#
There are two key changes to the enrolment scheme.
First, the proposed scheme will make changes to the school's 'area of reasonable convenience'.
Second, we are seeking feedback on a preferred method for allocating places and determining position on the school’s waiting list.
Selection criteria#
It is proposed that Preference Day student applicants from within the wider South Canterbury area will be prioritised in the following order:
- sibling of a current student
- sibling or child of a former student
- child of a current member of staff, or a child of a current or past member of the school board or Board of Proprietors
- child whose parent or caregiver is a member of the Anglican Diocese
- all other Preference applicants.
A selection method is required for situations where there are more applicants at a priority category than there are places available. The options are by:
- ballot system
- application date.
Under either option, a waitlist would be generated each year for students wishing to start attending in the following year. The waitlist would remain current until the next enrolment intake.
If you have a preference regarding these options, please indicate this in your feedback.
Ballot system#
A ballot system is the method used at most schools for selecting students where there are more applicants than places available at a particular priority category.
This means that the available number of places at that category level would be assigned to applicants at that priority level by ballot.
An applicant who recently submitted their application would be considered on the same grounds as an applicant at the same priority level whose parents lodged their application several years prior.
Application date#
The current enrolment scheme includes a selection method at a particular priority level of prioritising applicants whose names have been on a list held by the school for the longest time.
An applicant whose name has been on the list for several years would be prioritised over an applicant at the same priority category who has only recently submitted an application.
