What schools are included#
Ngā Iti Kahurangi is expanding to become the Small Schools Upgrade programme. It will include 934 schools in total. If your school or kura is included in the programme, we will already have been in contact with you.
Any school already in Ngā Iti Kahurangi is included in the Small Schools Upgrade programme. This includes the 171 schools with a roll of 200 or fewer that were added to the programme in June 2025.
To be considered for the Small Schools Upgrade programme, schools must:
- have a roll of 200 ākonga | students or fewer as of December 2023, or
- already have been part of Ngā Iti Kahurangi.
If your school's roll grew to more than 200 after December 2023, you will still be included in the programme. If your school roll was too high to meet our criteria and has now shrunk, you will not be included. Contact your property advisor if you have questions about not being included.
See the list of schools in the programme and their respective project managers below.

Improvements covered by the programme#
Ngā iti Kahurangi funds:
- LED lighting
- acoustic panels in teaching spaces
- thermal insulation in ceilings
- residual current devices (RCDs)
- carpet tiles in primary school teaching spaces
- asbestos management plans for primary schools.
How the programme works#
If your school is included in the programme, a project management company appointed by us will contact you. They will liaise with your school to do a series of audits. This includes looking at:
- how bright or dark a room is
- how noisy it gets
- age and thickness of carpet.
Based on the audit results and our standards, we decide what improvements need to be made to your school. Your project management company will discuss timings with you and then deliver the improvements.
We use contractors and products procured as part of the programme. If your school has independently done improvement work covered by the programme, we will not reimburse you.
Recycling#
As part of our programme, we recycle old lights from your school through the Abilities Group.
