What a Study Support Centre does#
SSCs help ākonga | students develop or improve good study habits to improve their achievement as they continue their education.
Individual study plans#
Each student gets an individual study plan. The plan includes goals for good study behaviour and habits, and achievement. Progress towards these goals is regularly reviewed with students. Progress towards these goals is regularly reviewed with students. Once goals are achieved, new ones are set.
Who is eligible for support#
Students in Years 1 to 8 can get support. These are students in schools and kura in the lowest 30% of the Equity Index.
How SSCs are managed#
SSCs can be run by:
- schools and kura
- iwi
- community groups.
They can be supervised study centres within schools or community facilities.
SSCs are run outside regular school times. Students generally attend after school for 4 hours, 3 days a week.
A centre is expected to:
- have a minimum of 10 students attending
- provide students with a healthy snack each day
- promote positive learning outside of the classroom.
How to set up a new SSC#
Schools and kura, iwi, and community organisations can apply for funding from us to establish and help run SSCs. Schools can apply as a group.
Preference is given to groups that support students from schools and kura who are in the lowest 30% of the Equity Index and face the greatest barriers to educational achievement.
Schools and kura outside of this range may also be given funding. This is decided by the Ministry Director of Education in the region.

How funding must be used#
SSC funding is for operational costs and to employ staff. It cannot be used for capital expenses such as buildings and computers.
Access to computers is a priority for this educational programme. Students must have access to the internet.
Monitoring and reporting#
As part of their contract with us, SSCs must report on outcomes and student achievement. This shows accountability for public funds. It must be completed by the contract holder.
