Firearms policy

Schools that own firearms, or have activities that involve them, must have a firearms policy. School boards are responsible for setting the policy.

Any firearms policy must comply with the laws stated in the Arms Act 1983, Arms Regulations 1992 and Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

You do not need a separate firearms policy for offsite firearms activities run by an external provider, such as during a school camp. Your Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) Safety Management Plan should address the safe use of firearms.

Firearms in schools guidelines

These guidelines are designed to support schools to have the correct policy and processes in place. The guidelines are based on 2 principles:

  • schools must provide a safe and lawful environment for students and staff
  • schools will have written policy and procedures for firearm use and will advise parents and caregivers of the policy.
