What a Teen Parent Unit is
TPUs are for students who are pregnant or have a child. They have early learning services attached.
Students have to enrol at the host school to attend the TPU. They have their classes at the TPU and can also attend some classes with their peers at the host school.
Responsibilities of a host school
The host school is responsible for management of the TPU including:
- employment
- reporting
- resourcing
- maintenance and building upgrades.
Maintenance and funding for Ministry-owned TPUs
If you have a TPU located in a Ministry-owned building at your school, you're responsible for maintaining and modernising the building, like any other building at your school.
You'll receive property maintenance grant funding to maintain the building and 5 Year Agreement (5YA) funding for its capital improvements. This funding is based on the square metres of the TPU.
We'll give you your TPU property funding with your regular school funding. As the host school is funded for property works you need to:
- include the TPU in your 10 Year Property Plan (10YPP)
- budget for its maintenance and capital improvements.
Maintaining a privately-owned TPU building
If you have a TPU located in a privately owned building, the building will be leased by us. School boards who lease a privately-owned building don't have any property responsibilities. We will manage the lease including rent payments. You'll need to manage and pay for:
- furniture and equipment
- tenant damage
- internal decoration.
