This was the first survey for the programme. It was sent to all participating early learning services and kōhanga reo in the programme and had a 42.5% response rate.
Key findings#
The report shows support for the service provided by KidsCan in delivering meals to up to 10,000 ECE children who need them.
The survey ratings for the supplier, KidsCan:
- Supplier reliability and consistency 97.5%
- Supplier food safety and hygiene 98.5%
- communication 98%
- flexibility and adaptability 99%
- service and professionalism 95%.
Good nutrition is one of the key factors affecting early brain development.
Improvements identified#
The survey identified observed improvements in child development following the introduction of the ECE Food programme.
Physical development#
- 77 per cent of services witnessed improvements in energy and stamina
- 34 per cent reported improvements in sleep patterns
- 32 per cent reported improvements in digestion
- 29 per cent reported fewer absences
- 26 per cent reports on healthy weight.
Cognitive and learning development#
- 62 per cent of services reported improvements in concentration
- 67 per cent reported improvements
- 34 per cent reported improvements in memory and problem solving
- 28 per cent reported improvements in language and fine motor skills.
Emotional and behavioural development #
- 69 per cent of services reported children were more settled and calmer
- 45 per cent reported positive shifts in mood swings and emotional outbursts
- 34 per cent reported improvements resilience
- 39 per cent reported that children were better at self-regulating.
Social and interpersonal development #
- 51 per cent of services reported positive shifts in children’s interactions with each other
- 42 per cent reported children were more confident
- 89 per cent reported children tried new foods
- 72 per cent reported meal times created a stronger sense of belonging.
