Schools may request staffing increases during the year if their roll grows. There are conditions that must be met, in order to acquire this staffing and funding.

Determining whether you're eligible for staffing roll increases

Before we can consider any increase, your permanent daily roll must have increased and stayed at that level for two school weeks (10 school days). However, an increase in staffing may be approved sooner by the manager of either the Ministry’s local office or the manager of the Resourcing Division.

The Ministry will not consider roll increases after 2 December each year.

Staffing recalculation

Where there's an increase in a school’s roll, and the conditions for enrolment are met, staffing will be recalculated using the new roll.

Conditions for staffing increases

Only fixed term appointments may be made for additional staffing entitlement generated by a roll increase. This applies to units, Middle Management Allowances (MMAs) and Senior Management Allowances (SMAs).

If your school is supported by the GMFS (guaranteed minimum formula staffing) or Assured staffing, new enrolments must be managed within the GMFS or Assured staffing provision. Once the provision is absorbed by roll increases, you'll need to apply for increases to staffing in the normal way.

Your school’s confirmed staffing notice may require you to get consent from the Resourcing Division before making more permanent appointments. If you increase your staffing roll because of roll increases after 1 March, you still need the Resourcing Division’s consent to make further appointments.

In secondary and composite schools, before the Ministry agrees to increase the roll, we may audit the school roll.
