International student visitors

The Ministry of Education provides information and guidelines for schools hosting short term international visitors. This includes visitors who intend to visit a school for 2 weeks or less, and who don't pay any fees.

Who is a visitor?

A visitor is an international student who holds a Visitor Visa issued by Immigration New Zealand for education purposes. The Ministry has categorised these students as follows.

Student visitors

These students will be considered as enrolled at your school if:

  • the school visit is for any period from 2 weeks up to 3 months, and/or
  • any period up to 3 months where the school will be receiving money for tuition or education services.

Short-term visitors

These students aren't considered enrolled at your school if:

  • the school visit is for less than 2 weeks (14 calendar days), and
  • the school won't be receiving money for tuition or education services.
