Analysis of variance overview and template

An analysis of variance is a key document for reporting to your community.

What to include in your analysis of variance

An analysis of variance is a statement in which your board provides an evaluation of progress you’ve made in achieving the aims and targets set out in your charter.

It shows parents, whānau and your community the actions you’ve taken to achieve your aims and targets and how successful these actions have been for improving student achievement.

The analysis of variance should also provide the basis for plans for the coming year.

A copy of your analysis of variance is also required to be included in your annual report

Schools' annual report (annual finance statement)

The legislative requirements for what an analysis of variance must contain are set out in section 87(2)(e) of the Education Act 1989.

  • the actions you’ve taken
  • the outcomes of these actions
  • the reason for the variance between the targets you set and what was achieved
  • an evaluation of the actions taken and their results, and
  • your planning for next year.

The use of this template is optional. It’s available in English and te Reo.
