As part of the Attendance Turnaround Package new attendance officer roles have been introduced to support schools, kura and learning communities to turn around attendance

The Attendance Turnaround Package announced in February 2023, is a five-year investment as part of Budget 2023 to address attendance issues with urgency. As part of the package, new attendance officer roles have been introduced to support schools, kura and learning communities to turn around attendance. The attendance officer role:

  • supports schools, kura and learning communities to turn around moderate and irregular absence patterns for ākonga from years 1 to 12
  • provides direct support to analyse and understand the drivers of absence and share a range of responses and practices across the community to improve attendance
  • works closely with a broad range of key partners and stakeholders including parent communities and iwi, contributing to, and complementing existing and emerging attendance responses.
