New Zealand wars
The New Zealand curriculum doesn't require schools to teach particular historical topics. We do though encourage schools and kura to teach Māori history and the land wars because they play an important role in defining the unique identity and culture of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Te Takanga o te Wā — Māori History Guidelines provide a framework to support teachers to teach Māori and New Zealand history with their students.
The guidelines encourage collaborative engagement with local iwi and hapū to incorporate local history into the classroom.
The aim is to use the stories and histories relating to schools’ geographic locations to instil a deeper sense of personal identity and belonging in every student.
