Growing our teacher workforce

The Government is investing in new pathways for teachers to train, and other recruitment initiatives - to bolster our education workforce and ensure the country has the teachers it needs for the future.

Update on ECE

  • a new investment for recruitment support  to attract returning New Zealand and overseas trained ECE teacher
  • a new investment for a Relocation Support Grant for retuning NZ or Overseas Trained ECE Teachers
  • a new investment to launch a dedicated marketing campaign for ECE  teachers.

Early childhood teacher supply – Teach NZ(external link)

Alongside this package for Teacher Supply, the Minister announced an increase in discretionary hours for funding purposes and consultation on changes to the requirement for the Person Responsible in centre based teacher led services. For further information view the TSI Fact Sheet [PDF, 222 KB].

The Budget 2019 initiatives announced recently are: 

  • a new investment in Employment Based ITE
  • an extension of the existing Teach First NZ programme
  • funding to support ITE providers to meet new and strengthened Teaching Council requirements
  • an extension of the existing returning New Zealand and overseas trained teacher recruitment support for primary and secondary
  • an extension of the existing Overseas Relocation Grant for secondary and primary Teachers
  • an extension of the existing Finder’s Fee Grant for primary and secondary schools
  • an extension of the existing Bilingual Education study award for primary and secondary
  • a new investment for co-design iwi scholarships for primary and secondary
  • an expansion of the existing TeachNZ scholarships fund for primary and secondary teachers
  • an extension of the National Beginning Teacher Induction Grant for primary and secondary schools
  • an extension of the Voluntary bonding scheme expansion
  • an new investment in Analysis and Research specifically for Teacher Supply
  • an extension of the existing Reach and Engagement programme.

We will also continue with the following previously funded initiatives

  • Auckland Beginner Teacher Grant (ABT) until 2020.
  • Recruitment, Retention and Responsibility National Fund (3RNF) until 2020.
  • Teacher Education Refresh (TER) until 2022.
